Shani (also spelled Sani) is one of the nine Navagraha or primary celestial beings in Hindu astrology. Shani is embodied in the planet Saturn. Shani is the bringer of misfortune and the Lord of Saturday.

According to legend, Hanuman is said to have rescued Shani from the clutches of Ravana. In this legend, Shani promised Hanuman that whoever prays to him will be rescued from the evil effects of Saturn, which in Hindu astrology, is said to produce evil effects on one's life when one is afflicted with Saturn. Alternatively, one who prays to Vishnu is protected from Saturn as he is said by some to be a great devotee of Vishnu.

In several parts of India, there are clusters of nine temples dedicated to the Navagraha. One such cluster is located near Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu. The Shani temple in this cluster is located at Tirunallar.
